Well, few compete with the carp-y-ness of the one and only Bearded Dragon. Here at Blue Line, we love bass, and the largemouth bass is often considered America’s most popular gamefish, but are we sure carp aren’t giving bucket mouths as run for their money? Yes, American fisheries typically don’t recognize carp species as game fish, yet carp are found in nearly every state with growing popularity in the conventional and fly tackle communities. Carp are as accessible as any trout, bass, and panfish species from coast-to-coast. Not to mention they fight like hell and are the equivalent of hooking into a muscle-bound water cow. Carp are spookier and often more technical than other freshwater fishes requiring stealth, sight fishing, and know-how for fly fishing success. The Bearded Dragon is an invaluable tool for carp fishing victory on the long rod. Tied with bead chain eyes optimal for reaching the fish, a slim body for quick sinking, and a
deer hair head catch the carp’s attention via pushing water. This little beast attracts the subtle bite of a feeding carp as well as any fly on the market, yet it is far from a one-trick-carp-pony (dragon?), as it’s magnet for redeye bass, small bass, and panfish while being light enough for a three-weight fly rod to cast. The real-life bearded dragon is a popular reptilian pet for those who want a change of pace from the norm, and the fly version from Blue Line offers the same for your fly box.

Small stream bass fishing is one of the more overlooked aspects of streamer fishing and few dedicated little water crawfish patterns (of quality) exists. It’s stood the test of time for a reason; it works and works well (have fish been caught on every content, minus Antarctica, using a bugger? Our money is on yes). The Schlapen Bugger is a Blue Line take on the classic pattern you probably find in your grandpa’s fly box, likely in the dozens, with minor tweaks and enhancements to increase the performance of a decades long fly fishing staple. After fishing a few crayfish flies and looking around the fly shops, I realized there weren't many good crayfish patterns out there that would do what I wanted. Most of them had dumbbell eyes, sank straight to the bottom, and got hung on the rocks almost immediately. So I started tying a crayfish pattern and fishing it on the river. The first versions were trying to imitate conventional Ned rig style fishing. I honed the fly down through the years. I wanted to keep it from snagging on the rocks when it swung and bounced along the bottom. The smallies were on the bottom and getting the fly down and castable was a balance. I was trying to solve the problem of the hook getting hung up on the rocks. I wanted a fly pattern that would sink to the bottom with the hook point up, and I wanted it to mimic the defensive position of a crayfish. I played around with foam and tungsten bead to balance it out. The rabbit strip slowed the fall and gave it a natural drop. The foam floated the hook upright and kept the fly from tipping over. After getting the fly dialed in, I started sharing it with friends. They started to catch fish and asked for more. So Chattanooga Creek Flies was born. It all started out of a need for a crayfish fly to fish the shoals of the Tennessee River. I like the black craws in the dirty water days. The olive is my favorite. It fishes well in clear water and smallies love them. The orange is my version of the traditional Rebel Craw and tan looks just like a molting crayfish.

Want your flies, fly line or accessories shipped in a BLC Holiday Box?
