Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo the Sistine Chapel, Beethoven wrote his Ninth Symphony, and Stephen Spielberg directed Jurassic Park. Artists who revolutionized their genres each have their ultimate creations that stand the test of time – their magnum opuses. In fly tying, we are graced with the Catnip by Blue Line Co.’s own Hobo Steve. The legend himself concocted his masterpiece on his homeless abode along the banks of the Yellowstone River, which is known by many as “the whitefish rodeo” because of its abundant whitey population. Some cry at the presence of the ugly, tiny-mouthed Rocky Mountain bonefish spazzing at the end of their line while fishing pristine Rocky Mountain freestones, but Hobo Steve, a true visionary, had the foresight to see the importance the native fish plays in growing large trout, so he created the Catnip to serve as a whitefish imitation. After quickly realizing its ability to attract voracious strikes from predatory fish, Blue Line adds an olive sculpin variant serving anglers equally as well, so now the Catnip is available in two colors mimicking two of the most common baitfish found in western trout waters. An artist’s magnum opus stands the test of time, and Hobo Steve’s Catnip is no different.
Best thrown on a six-weight or heavier.
